Herbal medicine is the use of whole plants or their extracts for the treatment of disease and the maintenance of good health. As a modern herbalist I have trained in the orthodox medical sciences as well as in phytotherapy (herbal medicine).
During your initial consultation I take a detailed medical history, check your blood pressure and occasionally carry out a physical examination. I may suggest that you visit your doctor to discuss further tests.
I will then give you an individual herbal prescription. This is likely to consist of a liquid tincture containing extracts of several herbs. Depending upon your case I may also give you a herbal tea or cream. At subsequent consultations I shall monitor your progress and change your prescription if necessary.
I aim to treat the whole person, and I recognise that diet and lifestyle play a vital part in the maintenance of good health.
Some of questions I ask during your consultation will be about your diet, how much exercise you take, and about your lifestyle in general. We can then discuss any changes you might make to improve your health. I may also recommend a nutritional supplement, although dietary change is to be preferred wherever possible.
After taking a degree in Biochemistry and working in laboratories for several years, I studied Herbal Medicine on a four-year course with the College of Phytotherapy in East Sussex. Until 2006 I combined my practice of Herbal Medicine with teaching biological sciences, mainly to adult students including those studying the degree in Phytotherapy at the University of East London.
Currently I practise in Ipswich, Manningtree and Colchester. I am studying for an MSc in Nutritional Medicine at the University of Surrey, which I hope to complete in 2009.
I am a Member of the College of Practitioners of Phytotherapy.
